What Makes Portland So Special for Wine
In addition to being a fabulous destination in its own right, the Portland is ideally situated to visit all of Oregon’s best wine regions.
The Oregon wine industry began in the late 19th century but started to gain strength in the 1960s when several California growers opened vineyards. During the 1970s more winemakers migrated to the region and started to organize as an industry. Oregon’s land use laws proved ideal as they had preserved a significant amount of land suitable for vineyards.
By the 1980s Oregon wine country was established, already known for some of the best Pinot Noir in the world. And the industry showed no signs of slowing down continuing to add both wineries and vineyards. The state industry continued to market itself, establishing the first of several AVAs (American Viticulture Areas).
By 2009, the number of wineries increased to 453 and is now the 3rd largest wine producer in the country. Cheers to that!
